CreativeMornings: Nate Utesch, staying true to what you love while building your career

At Fort Wayne's inaugural CreativeMornings event in January 2019, Art Director and Musician Nate Utesch spoke on the theme of "surreal," delving into the ways he has struggled to stay true to his love for the abstract while building his career.

Today, Utesch is one half of the Secretly Group art department, production artist for Tidal Waves Music label, and art director at Tension Division. Since 2017, the Tension Division team has worked on global creative direction and design for bands, including The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Twenty One Pilots, Thirty Seconds to Mars, AFI, and Underoath.

Utesch is also an electronic musician under the moniker, Metavari.

"I hope we can be proud of what we're up to, regardless of the footprint that we make," Utesch says. "The joy from our work can come from the reasons of why we love doing it, and not from who's affirming us externally. I hope that you have a word, like the word 'surreal' for me that keeps you in check."

CreativeMornings is a free global breakfast lecture series that launched in Fort Wayne in January 2019. It happens from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the second Friday of every month at a different location in downtown Fort Wayne. It includes a short talk by a local creative, a Q&A, and of course, free breakfast.

Visit CreativeMornings Fort Wayne's website for more information and announcements about future events.

The next CreativeMornings is Friday, February 8th, at Artlink, featuring Community Activist and Designer Réna Bradley speaking on "Symmetry."
